Descriptive statistics
Calculate mean, median and spread, with exact variance and distinct sample and population models.
How to use
Enter one value per line and choose population to divide by n or sample to divide by n−1. Calculate, inspect the summaries, exact fractions and sorted table, then copy the complete report or download TXT.
For 1, 2 and 3, the mean and median are 2. Population variance is 2/3; sample variance and sample standard deviation are both 1.
Support & limits
Sum, mean, median and variance use scaled integers and exact fractions; subtraction of large nearby values does not use floating point. Population variance is Σ(x−mean)²/n; sample variance divides by n−1. Standard deviation uses an approximate binary64 square root, displayed to at most 12 significant digits. Decimal display uses 6 places, with halfway cases away from zero; a tiny variance may display as zero while its exact fraction remains visible. No weights, missing values or grouping separators are supported. Empty lines, including a final empty line, are rejected. Arabic and Persian digits are accepted. The report normalizes number spelling and sorts values, without preserving redundant zeros. No automatic storage or input transmission.
Common questions
When should I choose sample or population?
Choose population when these values are the entire group being described. Sample estimates variance by dividing the squared-deviation sum by n−1. The tool does not infer your model or perform statistical inference tests.
