Text and file hash generator

Compute SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 for UTF-8 text or the exact bytes of a local file.

Processing is local with no automatic storage. Worker deadline: 5 seconds; complete result including details: 2 MiB. Preview is bounded; copy and download are complete.

Text is encoded as UTF-8 without adding a BOM or intentionally changing line endings; textarea input follows browser behavior. Use a file to hash exact original bytes. A digest is not encryption or a secure password-storage method.

How to use

Choose text or file input and a hash algorithm. Paste text or select the file, then process. Copy or download the digest, and compare it with a trusted reference when checking file identity.

Try an example

The text abc without a line break produces ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad with SHA-256. Adding LF changes the bytes and therefore the digest.

Support & limits

Text received by the engine is encoded as UTF-8 without adding a BOM, normalizing Unicode or changing CR/LF; a U+FEFF already in the text remains part of it. The text field may normalize line endings when pasting; choose file input to preserve original file bytes. Files are hashed from their exact bytes, including any BOM, without decoding or using their names. Computation uses Web Crypto. Hashing is not encryption, does not reveal the file contents, and does not establish origin without a trusted reference.

Common questions

Is a plain SHA digest suitable for secure password storage?

No. This is a general digest tool, not a password-storage or key-derivation system. Matching an untrusted digest also does not establish a trustworthy source.
