Citation formatter

Format reference details you enter yourself.

Enter metadata from your source. No metadata is fetched or invented. Asterisks mark italic text in Markdown format. Check your institution’s requirements.

Enter authors in final style order: surname and initials for APA, or the MLA author form. Supply APA sentence-case titles and appropriate MLA title capitalization; names and letter case are not inferred. Leave an unknown author or date blank: missing authors put the title first, APA uses n.d. for a missing date, and MLA omits it.

Basic templates cover authored books, webpages, and journal articles with numeric pages. Editions, translations, edited chapters, article identifiers, and multiple containers are outside these templates. Volume and issue are positive integers; use full page ranges for APA. Web dates refer to the page publication, not a site copyright year. Retrieval dates are never added automatically; supply one in APA only for changing content. Output is a reference-list entry in plain Markdown, not an in-text citation.
